Israel agrees to arm the Palestinian police in the West Bank

The Israeli defense ministry said that the defense minister Shaoul Mofaz agreed with the Palestinian authority to run Palestinian police armed patrols in the cities of Toulkarem, Ramullah and Areiha.

A spokesman for the ministry said that Mofaz decided to permit Palestinian police members to carry weapons once again gradually on the ground that the Palestinian authority to give names of the police men who will be working in these patrols in order to be checked by the Israeli internal security.

The Palestinian cabinet recently aproved a plan provided for deploying armed forces for the police in order to control the state of security chaos in the Palestinian territories.

The Palestinian authorities asked Israel not to obstruct the work of these forces. However, Palestinian and Israeli officials are to meet to discuss this matter, according to the Palestinian negotiations affairs minister Saeb Oreikat.

In another development, the Israeli general TV announced that Israel decided to freeze the building of 145 houses in Malae Adomim to the north of Jerusalem in the West Bank. The source clarified that the decision was taken following the pressure made by the US concerning settlement.

On Monday, the Israeli government approved the building of 600 houses in the said settlements whose municiality chairman Bani Kasheriel said that building these houses was approved under the rule of Ehud Barak government in 1999.
