Emergency law narrowed in Egypt, parties call for abrogation
Egypt, Politics, 8/5/2004

The Egyptian authorities have taken a step towards expanding the margin of public freedoms, manifested in the announcement by the attorney general, advisor Maher Abdul Rahid to minimize the scale of implementing the emergency law so as to be limited to issues pertinent to state security, internally and externally.

However, party leaders and constitutional law experts consider this step as an attempt to contain the demands of the Egyptian public to complete change and total abrogation of the emergency law. They stressed this change does not provide the full change sought by citizens to a fair judiciary.
