Mufti Al Qods hails Moroccan king's stance to protect the city
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 8/4/2004

Mufti Al Qods (Jerusalem), Sheikh Ekrema Sabri, hailed Tuesday the stance of King Mohammed VI following news that Israeli extremist groups plan to launch attacks against Al Aqsa mosque, one of the holiest sites in Islam.

In a statement to the Moroccan national radio (RTM), Sheikh Sabri praised the stance of "the Moroccan government and people who support law and justice," calling on other Arab and Islamic countries to follow the example of the Moroccan sovereign to enable them to "unify their ranks" in face of the dangers threatening Al Aqsa mosque.

In urgent messages to the quartet (EU, US, UN and Russia), King Mohammed has warned of irresponsible acts that may be perpetrated by Israeli hardliners and which may have serious consequences on the whole region given the particular importance of the city of Al-Qods for Moslems.

"Extremists cannot act without the support of the government," said the Mufti, stressing that Israel is endeavouring to rid itself of responsibility by pretending to be incapable of protecting Al Aqsa mosque from extremist aggressions.

Sheikh Ekrema held Israel and the international community responsible for the consequences of Israeli violations of international law.

King Mohammed VI, chairman of Al-Qods committee (an offshoot of the Jeddah-based Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC)), also called in his message to the quartet for intensified efforts to help the region out of tension and violence, support the resumption of the peace process and the implementation of the Roadmap, protect the Palestinian people and spare the region the spiral of violence at a time it needs peace and stability more than ever.
