Arab, African moves to discuss the crisis; the UN: security conditions are improving in Darfur camps
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 8/3/2004
The special representative for the UN in Sudan, Yan Brunik, said that the security conditions in camps for the refugees have been improved despite the fact that the rebels and the militias fighting them caused the lack of security in the area.
Brunik added that Khartoum stopped the policy of bringing back the homeless to their villages by force and stopped measures like delaying the issuance of travel visas.
Brunik's statements came following his meeting with the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael in Khartoum on Monday. The Sudanese minister said he had agreed with Brunik to draw a plan of what Khartoum government can achieve during the period given by the recent resolution of the UN Security Council.
Meantime, the representative of the UN secretary general, Francis Dinaq, said yesterday that the state of chaos and human rights violations are continuous in Darfur. He expressed his concern over the return back of displaced in this area.
Dinaq said following a mission in Darfur on July 25th until August that in contrary to official statements which talk about the improvement of the security condition and the return back of the displaced, chaos is still continuous in Darfur.
A UN statement explained that the " UN secretary general representative is very concerned over the information and news which talked recently about the continued rape cases of women outside the camps." Dinaq who is of the Sudanese nationality indicated that most of the displaced persons expressed their desire to return back home but they are scared of that because of the state of chaos and continued attacks launched by Jangaweid.
Meanwhile, diplomatic moves are continuous at the Arab and African levels in order to contain the crisis in Darfur. Next Sunday, the Arab foreign ministers will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis in the area. The secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa will hold intensive talks with the Foreign ministers in order to convene a meeting at the request of the Sudanese government.
