Palestine-UN, Politics, 7/31/2004

The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission For Western Asia, ESCWA, Mairvat Tillawi has stressed that the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories in Palestine and Golan and the building of settlements and plantation of settlers have aggravated the socio-economic situation of the Arab citizens in the occupied territories.

In a press conference held at the UN headquarters in Beirut on Friday,Tillawi indicated that the report which was prepared on the demand of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, on the negative effect of the Israeli occupation reviews the pains and great suffering of Arab citizens in the occupied territories.

The report underlined that the Israeli occupation troops demolished in 2003 more than 511 Palestinian homes in the West Bank and 858 others in Gaza while more than 28 thousand homes were damaged.

The report added that the Israeli occupation troops plucked thousands of fruit trees and destroyed 806 water wells.

With regard to the racial separation wall which is being built on the territories of the West Bank, the report said that more than 51 percent of the water resources of the West Bank have been confiscated and around 169 thousand people have become isolated within 9 separated pockets.

As for the occupied Syrian Golan, the report indicated that the Israeli occupation authorities have built 40 settlements in the occupied Golan and have planted in them 15700 Israeli settlers and imposed the Israeli identity card and the Israeli law on most of the Syrian citizens. The report added that the Israeli occupation authorities are planning to build 9 more new settlements in Golan.
