Arab League against threatening Sudan
Regional-Sudan, Politics, 7/31/2004
The secretary general of the Arab League Amr moussa expressed his opposition for threats to imposing sanctions on Sudan over the developments taking place in Darfur.
Moussa said that there are certain forces which were in a hurry to announce readiness to send forces to Sudan like Australia. He added that Australia's 100% policy of hostilities to the Arabs make us raise question marks, especially following its criticism of the International Court of Justice over the wall of separation built by Israel.
In Sudan, the rebel " Justice and equity" movement weclomed the UN resolutions and considered it as a direct condemnation of the government of Khartoum over the events taking place in Darfur. The spoeksman for the movement said that the Sudanese government has to dismantle Jangawid militias and provide relief to vulnerable people. The movement also called for making a neutral international investigations over what it called the mass annihilation crimes in the district.
But a Sudanese group calling itself "Darfur people solidarity society" in the UK and Ireland rejected in a seminar held in London any foreign intervention in Darfur but it called on the international community to alleviate the humanitarian crisis there.
The group which said -- it represents the major silent group in the region -- stressed the need of extending the cease fire and giving the chance for solving the crisis peacefully and convening a conference for all races and sects in Darfur, at the support of the UN and the African Federation.
In the same context, the African Federation called on the Sudanese authorities to move immediately to protect its citizens in Darfur after a fact finding commission in the area found the situation as having further deteriorated during the few past weeks.
President of Nigeria, whose country presides over the rotating presidency of the African Federation told journalists that the federation has to increase the number of the protection forces allocated for Darfur at a summit held several weeks ago in Ethiopia.
