Sudan rejects UN resolution over Darfur, African federation calls on Khartoum for rapid move
Sudan-UN, Politics, 7/31/2004

The Sudanese government has announced its rejections of the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council over Darfur, giving a grace period of 30 days to settle the current crisis, otherwise it will face international sanctions. The Sudanese minister of information al-Zahawi Ibtahim described the resolution as misleading.

Sudan's representative at the UN al-Fateh Muhammad Ahmad Erwa said that the issuance of the resolution in such a timing reveals what he called the hidden agenda of certain countries. He added " I am unable to express when I see such unfair policy and the double- standard behavior. It is a disappointing action."

He questioned " are these the same countries which appear on the TV screens killing innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan and occupy people." The UN Security Council approved at a 13 votes majority with two absentee a resolution submitted by the US and Britain giving the Sudanese governmenment a one month grace period to settle Darfur crisis, otherwise it will face international sanctions in case it will not abide by its obligations within the set time aforementioned.

In coordination with London, Washington introduced an amendment to the draft of the resolution according to which it cancelled the word "sanctions" and replaced it with " arrangements," according to article 41. These "Arranegments" include halting economic, railway, air, land and mail and telecommunications contacts and other communication means partially or wholly and severing diplomatic relations."
