Three Moroccan political parties set up 'constructive opposition'
Morocco, Politics, 7/30/2004
Three Moroccan political parties announced Wednesday they have set up a "center right" coalition dubbed the "National Alliance," part of a "constructive opposition."
Leaders of the three parties, namely the National Democrat Party (PND), Party of Reform and Development (PRD) and Citizenship Initiative and Development (ICD), told the press the coalition is a first step toward the setting up of a "strong party."
The alliance, they explained, will be led by a chairmanship Council grouping the three parties' secretary generals with a rotating chairmanship.
This alliance will remain faithful to the principles of modernity, democracy and openness, said the three leaders, deeming that the success of the democratic transition process requires the reconstitution of the political scene and the activation of parties' actions in order to face the "balkanisation" of the political scene.
On the other hand, leaders of the three parties criticized the government action which, they said, "has not honored its commitments" and has neglected the proposals of the opposition.
They pointed out that their alliance is different from other political groupings which they described as "circumstantial," adding that they will also work for the creation of a parliamentary alliance.
