News on Saddam's coma, denied by Baghdad, Saddam had a stroke
Iraq, Politics, 7/29/2004

The British daily mirror daily said yesterday quoting the chairman of the defense committee for Saddam Hussein as saying that the toppled Iraqi President had a brain stroke and might die before his trial.

The Jordanian lawyer Muhammad al-Rashdan said he sent on Tuesday a message to the chairman of the Iraqi criminal court Salem Chalabi in which he asked for permitting doctors to examine him. Al-Rashdan explained " our information that he is in a very bad health condition. We learnt from the ICRC that Saddam's brain should be examined to know the extent of the stroke impact on him and we do think he might die because of health problem."

Al-Rashdan continued " we do think also that there are attempts to kill him.. we are very worried to lose our client," noting that " according to Geneva convention, we have the right to meet with our client.. but our requests to that effect were all ignored."

In the same context, the Iraqi deputy foreign minister Hamid al-Bayati denied news rumored on Saddam's coma. He told the Qatari news agency in Baghdad that these news are "groundless."

However, Iraq's news website on the Internet said yesterday that Saddam was admitted on Tuesday in a critical health situation to the hospital's intensive care unit as his health conditions were greatly deteriorated and is considered brain dead with the exception of the heart which works by medical support.
