Going ahead with Egypt's Afro-Arab power cooperation
Egypt-Regional, Economics, 7/28/2004

In appreciation of the outstanding efforts and successful endeavors, Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis, who was assigned to continue in his post in the recent cabinet reshuffle, underlined his Ministry's strategy and the forthcoming plans to upgrade Egypt's National Power Grid. More attention will be paid to projects implemented outside the country such as the expansion projects of electricity networks in the Arab and African countries.

This besides removing obstacles hindering the exportation of surplus energy via the Arab Mashreq-Maghreb Network. The next period will also witness the establishment of 10 new generating stations, scheduled to be established under the sixth five-year plan 2007-2012. The new stations are designed to add 8375 megawatts with total investment estimated at $ 2.992 billion for the foreign component and L.E. 8.217 billion for the local component. The plan implemented by the Ministry is designed to meet the growing demand for electricity in a bid to add 4500 megawatts by the year 2007.

Total investments of the said plan is estimated to reach $ 1.272 billion for the foreign component and L.E. 3.106 billion for the local component. According to Younis, the Ministry will exert further efforts to improve the National Power Grid via using natural gas, solar, wind and hydro-electric resources for generating environment-friendly electricity. The Minister said that a plan is currently being implemented to meet the growing demand of electricity from 5.5 % to 7.5 %.

Meantime, the Ministry will start its first project in the Middle East and Africa in the next few months for generating electricity with total production capacity of 130,000 kilowatts operating by solar energy in day and natural gas at night.
