Al-Assad made assurances on Mubarak's health; An agreement to help the Iraqi people

During his short visit to Cairo yesterday, where he had met with President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad underlined the " importance of supporting the Iraqi people to preserving their territorial integrity, sovereignty, independence and security. A matter which is positively reflected on the security and stability of the region."

President al-Assad was welcomed at Cairo's international airport by the chairman of the Egyptian government Ahmad Nazif before he had headed to meet Mubarak at his house.

The spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency Majid Abdul Fattah said that the Syrian President " underlined the importance of co-operation with Iraq in order to prepare the appropriate conditions for the withdrawal of foreign forces from its lands," noting " Syria's support for the efforts carried out by the Iraqi government in preparations for the elections to be held by the beginning of next year."

Abdul Fattah indicated the identical view points between the two Presidents on the Palestinian issue, adding that they stressed the need of supporting Arab efforts for unifying the Palestinian ranks and restoring stability to the internal Palestinian front as an introduction to resume the peace process. The two leaders also stressed the need of implementing UN Security Council resolution over the Israeli-built wall of separation in the West Bank. The Egyptian Middle East News Agency noted that al-Assad and Mubarak discussed Cairo's efforts in following up the Israeli withdrawal plan from Gaza.
