Allawi in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia-Iraq, Politics, 7/28/2004

The Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi started yesterday a visit to Saudi Arabia which lasts for two days in the course of his regional tour aiming at normalizing Arab relations with Iraq. He is due to meet today ( Wednesday) in Jeddah with the US secretary of state Colin Powell who arrived in Cairo yesterday in the beginning of his tour in the region.

The Saudi official news agency said that Allawi discussed yesterday with King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah " developments in the region, especially the situation in Iraq," adding that the two sides underlined the importance of " Iraq's unity and sovereignty so as to be able to play its due role at the international arena." Saudi officials close to Allawi's talks with the Saudi leaders said the two sides discussed security on the borders. They added that the Saudi leaders expressed their concern over weapons smuggling from Iraq to the Kingdom. They added the two sides discussed steps to fight sneaking and smuggling via the borders.

The Saudi government welcomed Allawi's visit. It said in its weekly meeting yesterday chaired by Crown Prince Abdullah that this visit " achieves the ambitions for the two peoples and serves Iraq's interests."
