Jordan rules out dangers of Dimona reactor on its citizens
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 7/27/2004
Jordan denied yesterday mews that the Israeli Dimona nuclear reactor to have at the meantime radiation effects on the people of the southern areas adjoining it in Jordan.
The Jordanian comment came yesterday following statements made by the Israeli nuclear expert Murdakhai Fanouno on that nuclear radiation from the Israeli reactor might threaten the people of Jordan. Jordanian officials and experts said that the nuclear monitoring did not indicate any activity that might constitute a danger.
The spokeswoman for the Jordanian government Asmaa al-Khuder said that the Kingdom has not witnessed any unnatural pollution rates resulting from the Dimona reactor in Israel, considering that the matter is not the " case of a political debate." In a press conference Khuder said that so far there is no monitoring to any unnatural rates of industrial radiation, stressing that Jordan " is with freeing the region from nuclear weapons and with an international monitoring for this subject."
However, in statements to Arab papers, Fanouno said that the chimneys of Dimona reactor work only when winds are in the direction of Jordan and recommended the Jordanian authorities to make medical tests for citizens residents in the areas close to the borders with Israel.
The Israeli intelligence kidnapped Fanouno and was sentenced to imprisonment under the accusation of highest treason in 1986 after he had disclosed to the British Sunday Times details of his works in Dimona reactor.
The Israeli authorities, however, still bans Fanouno from travel since he was released in April this year after he had spent 18 years in jail, considering that he still constitutes a real danger in national security.
