Egyptian police detains seven Islamists
Egypt, Politics, 7/27/2004
One Egyptian military source stressed that the Egyptian police detained seven Islamists suspected to be members of al-" Takfir wal Hijra " group, responsible for the assassination of the Egyptian al-Awqaf minister in 1977.
The source explained that the Egyptian police detained the seven men in Ateyat al-Baroud town in al-Buheira governorate last week. The Egyptian authorities in May detained 54 members of the banned Muslim Brothers groups.
The security authorities in Egypt are chasing several Islamic groups since September 11, 2001 attacks, accused of trying to topple the regime. However, the fighting between the two sides started in the 1990s.
