Syrian judiciary postpones considering Nueiseh file until August 15th
Syria, Politics, 7/27/2004

The Syrian judiciary decided yesterday to postpone considering the case of the chairman of the defense committees for democratic freedoms and human rights Aktham Nueiseh until August 15th.

The state's security court in Damascus yesterday held its first session for Nueiseh in the presence of the Egyptian organization for human rights, Hafez Abu Saadeh as a representative for the International federation of Human rights, and Najad al-Burai as a representative for the Euro-Mediterranean network for human rights, while diplomats were not permitted to attend.

The defendant committee -- more than seven lawyers -- for Nuseiseh who was detained by the military security in Lattakia on April 13 demanded to postpone interrogating him until getting acquainted with the file of the case.

One activist in human rights said that continued trial of Nueiseh reveals the persistence of the Syrian authorities to condemn human rights activists and disregard of the calls of the international legal organizations to release all opinion detainees in Syria.

Nueiseh who was a political prisoner between 1991- 1996 is accused of carrying out activities violating the socialist regime " and challenging revolution's objectives."
