Kuwait sentences to death one citizen spied for Iraq
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 7/26/2004

A Kuwaiti court yesterday sentenced to death one Kuwaiti under the charge of spying for the former Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hussein whose forces invaded Kuwait and occupied it in 1990.

Muhammad al-Jweid in his late 30th was convicted of spying for the Iraqi regime since 1993 and giving information for Kuwaiti military positions and American army bases.

Kuwait was in 2003 a starting point for the war launched by the US against Iraq. Al-Jweid has only one month to appeal for the sentence which also included death in absentia against two Iraqi diplomats, whose names were not announced, accused of collaborating with the Kuwaiti citizen.

Al-Jweid -- a former officer in the Kuwaiti national guard -- was detained in 2003 under the charge of highest treason.
