Khartoum rejects Washington's allegations over extermination in Darfur
Sudan-USA, Politics, 7/24/2004

The Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael rejected the American allegations to that what is taking place in Darfur are acts of mass annihilation. He told journalists before his meeting with the foreign policy coordinator at the European Union Javier Solana in Brussels on Friday that his government is doing its best to solve the humanitarian crisis.

Ismael considered the US Congress as biased after the house of representatives unanimously approved a decision considering what is taking place in Darfur is a mass annihilation and called on the White House to lead the international efforts to interfere in that area.

Ismael explained he prefers conveying the view point of the African federation concerning Darfur issue. The federation issued a decision at the African summit in which it explained that there are no mass annihilation in the region.

In the course of continued pressures on Khartoum, al-Adel and al-Musawat ( justice and equity ) rebel movement in Darfur denied what was announced by Sudanese officials on taking measures to protect the civilians there.

The movement's general coordinator Abu Baker Hamid Nour said that the acts of killing and expulsion are still continuous.

Earlier on Friday, the Sudanese media center which is close to the government announced that a Sudanese government sentenced to death members of the Jangaweid militias over the crimes they had committed in Darfur.

Chairman of the judicial commission in southern Darfur district, where the trials were held, Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said that the court convicted 200 members of the militias with various penalties including death penalty.

In an indicator which reveals the volume of the crisis, the assistant for the UN secretary general for humanitarian affairs in New York Yan Egg-land said that the total deaths in Darfur might have reached by now 50,000. The relief agencies try to ensure food and medicines amid very hard conditions the displaced are facing in what is considered by the UN as a humanitarian crisis. The Sudanese government said that the donating international sides provided only 20% of the humanitarian aid it committed to reach to Darfur.
