Demands to expand the political participation in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 7/24/2004
Human rights and civil society activists demanded the freedom of forming Egyptian parties so as to ensure effective participation in the political life of all social strata and dismantling the ruling national party which monopolizes the political life in the country.
A seminar held by the Egyptian organization for human rights witnessed a heated debate over the role practiced by the parties affairs committee at the Shoura council in a way that places obstacles before the birth of new parties so as to leave the place empty before the ruling national party.
The convening of the seminar coincided with the rejection of the parties affairs committee the foundation of two parties which are al-Ghad and al-Wasat. Very often the committee justifies its rejection under the pretext that these parties are not different from the formation of the political parties already existing on the arena.
The secretary of the founders of al-Ghad, and member of the parliament Ayman Nour said that his party received the same fate for the third time because of what he called the oppressive decisions of the committee which does not want the foundation of other parties, taking part in the ruling party.
