Syria's Muslim Brothers call on Damascus to end harassment
Syria, Politics, 7/24/2004

The general observer of the Mulsim brothers in Syria Ali Sader Eddine al-Bayanouni welcomed the recent release of several political detainees of the group.

In a statement, al-Bayanouni called for completing the release of other detainees and ending political harassment, abrogating special laws especially law no.49 which states death penalty to members of the Muslim Brothers groups.

The Syrian authorities several day ago released scores of political detainees most of them from the banned Muslim Brothers and the liberation party, according to a presidential pardoning issued last Friday and covered persons convicted by crimes and minor crimes.

The release operation coincided with the fourth anniversary of President Bashar al-Assad accession to authority of July 17th, 2000.

Worthy mentioning that President al-Assad pardoned since November 2000 more than 800 political prisoners.
