Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 7/23/2004

The Kuwaiti security forces detained several persons described as extremist Islamists who recruit Kuwaiti youths to fight the multi national forces in Iraq. Kuwait received four Kuwaitis from the Syrian authorities who were accused of sneaking to the Iraqi lands through Syria.

The director general of the public relations administration at the ministry of the Interior Adel al-Hashash said that two of the accused men were able earlier to enter Iraq and to return back later while the two others where seized while trying to cross to the Iraqi borders.

He explained that the accused persons admitted to the Kuwaiti authorities by whom they were interrogated after their return back of accusations addressed to them.

Meantime, the Arab human rights organization expressed its concern over the harassment imposed on defenders of torture victims in Kuwait.

The committee which has Paris as a headquarters strongly criticized the accusations made by the Kuwaiti authorities to Khaled al-Dousari, the spokesman for the victims of torture society in Kuwait of training and dispatching volunteers to Kuwait.

A statement said that al-Dousari was tortured and demanded the authorities to investigate the incident.

The organizations signatory to the statement which are al-Karamah society in defense of human rights which has Geneva as a headquarters, the world justice organization in the Hague and the society in charge of protecting and aiding defenders of human rights with Paris as a headquarters all called on the Kuwaiti government to halt what these societies called as harassments.

Member of the Kuwaiti nation's council Walid al-Tabtabai who is also the chairman of the parliamentarian human rights committee backed what was stated by the report.

The spokesman for the Arab human rights committee Haitham Mana' said that his organization owns " live testimonies " in voice and picture on the victims of torture in Kuwait. He added that pressures on militants against torture, including Khaled al-Dousari, the spokesman for the society of victims of torture in Kuwait should be halted.

By the beginning of July, the Kuwaiti daily Asseyasah said that Washington warned Kuwait that 9 suspected Kuwaitis of having links to al-Qaida might be involved in attacks against the American forces in Iraq.

This warning came in a document handed over to the Kuwaiti authorities by Francis Townsind, the US assistant national security advisor, in charge of fighting terrorism, during a visit to Kuwait.
