Ali Saleh offers the last opportunity for al-Houthi to surrender
Yemen, Politics, 7/23/2004

The Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh offered the Yemeni clergy Bader Eddine al-Houthi and his followers the last opportunity to surrender themselves.

The Yemeni ministry of defense said it received on Wednesday evening instructions from the President to halt the military operations in Sadaah province, the headquarters of al-Houthi and to give the last opportunity for the " rebels." News reports in Sanaa said that the mediation came at the request of the clergy men and parliamentarians in an attempt to convince al-Houthi and his followers to surrender themselves to the authorities and then bring them to trial.

In its website, the ministry said that the clergy men who were assigned by the President to maintain dialogue with the " mislead " among followers of the clergy al-Houthi stressed that they do 'not accept the idea of dialogue." Official sources announced that the army forces detained a car loaded with weapons and ammunition in the mountains to the north of the country.

In press statements on Tuesday, al-Houthi said that the reason behind the eruption of confrontations between his followers and the government forces since the mid of June is his position which stands against Washington and Israel, accusing Saleh of seeking to satisfy America " at the expense of his people." However, these confrontations led to killing 300 persons including 46 of the government's forces, according to the Yemeni official sources.
