Christians demand better representation in the Iraqi national congress
Iraq, Politics, 7/22/2004
Iraqi politicians said they represent 8 Christian parties, yesterday demanded a better representation for the Christians in the National Congress which is presumed to appoint by the end of July a government monitoring system.
Nimrud Bito from the Assure national party said " it was decided to give us three percent of the seats in the national congress while we have to get five to 6 percent of the seats of the thousands of representatives in the works of the conference."
Bito was talking in a press conference aiming at showing the unity of Christian parties upon the launching of the long electoral process which is supposed to lead Iraq to full sovereignty in 2005 or 2006.
In the name of all Christian parties, Bito protested that the Christians only got one ministry in the Interim government assumed by Pascal Isho Wardeh, the ministry of expatriates. He also protested that the Christians only got one out of the 43 ambassadors appointed on Monday. He said this " does not represent the reality of the Christian people."
