Palestine, Politics, 7/21/2004

News reports in Palestine said that member of the Palestinian legislative council and former minister of information Nabil Amre was hit by seven bullets in his right leg following a fire bullet opened at him while he was inside his house in al-Teira quarters in Ramullah.

Amre was admitted to Sheikh Zayed hospital in Ramullah, where he underwent a surgery in his leg. A medical source said that Amre health condition is not in danger É however, there is a danger on his right leg." News reports quoted Tareq, the son of Nabil Amre saying that his father was laying on the Sofa watching the TV while a veiled man opened fire at him from behind the fence of the house and hit him in his leg and then fled.

The incident took place a short time after Amre made a TV interview in which he talked about the need to fight corruption and the need to make vast reforms inside the Palestinian authority.

One year earlier, gunmen opened fire at Amre's house after he had made strong criticism to President Yasser Arafat on the way he runs the Palestinian authority. Amre who has a degree in the media was appointed a representative at the legislative council in 1996. He was appointed by President Arafat as a minister for parliamentary issues in 1998- 1999 and Amre occupied the post of the minister of information in the government of Mahmoud Abbas.
