Washington, London describe situations in Darfur as grave
Sudan-USA, Politics, 7/21/2004

The US secretary of state Colin Powell on Tuesday announced that the international community "is not pleased" with the very grave situation in Darfur to the west of Sudan. He said during his meeting with journalists in Washington that before anything else security should be cared for.

He considered that the Sudanese government does nothing to detain members of the Jangaweid militias and condemned what he described the assassination operations taking place in the area. He said " the people do not feel secure while leaving the refugees camps in search of food." Powell visited Darfur by the end of June and said after his return back to Washington that he will continue pressuring the UN Security Council to adopt likely sanctions on Sudan.

For his part, the British envoy to Sudan, Allen Goulti agreed with Powel in describing the situation in Darfur as " very grave." Goulti said after his meeting with the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Abu al-Gheit in Cairo coming from Khartoum on Tuesday evening, that the situation is threatening of a catastrophe especially after pending the negotiations between the government and the rebels of the al-Adel Wal Musawat and the Sudan's liberation front movements.

Abu al-Gheit said that the Sudanese government should be supported instead of pressuring it or threatening of imposing sanctions on its, " a matter which might give adverse results to the ambitions of the international community."
