Syria, Italy children heart surgery center opened

Syria's Assistant to Higher Minister of Education for Health Affairs, Dr. Hussam Shibly, and the Italian Ambassador in Damascus Francesco Sirolli on Tuesday signed an agreement on building a center for children heart surgery and bone marrow transplant as well as a blood bank at the Damascus-based Children Hospital.

The proposed center is the first of its kind in the Middle East, and will be ready by the end of next year. It will be funded by Italian easy loans for 15 years, built and equipped under the supervision of the Italian World Society for the Protection of Heart of Children and the Grande Ospidale of Milan University for the Transplant of Bone Marrow.

The suggested project aims at providing open heart surgery operations for children, treatment, early diagnosis of heart disease at pregnancy and protection from heart ailment.

The signing ceremony was attended by Prof. Andrea Casconi, the Trade Attache at the Italian Embassy in Damascus and Prof. Fabio Dinia and Tammam Yousef, Representatives of the World Society-Heart of Children in the World.
