Iraqi minister prepares in Damascus for Allawi's visit
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 7/19/2004
Iraq's minister of state Adnan al-Janabi announced in Damascus that a financial Iraqi delegation started yesterday its meetings with officials at the Syrian ministry of finance in order to solve the issues of money suspending between the two sides, while one Iraqi security delegation in charge of drawing a background of cooperation between the two countries will start its meetings with its Syrian counterparts. This is, however, few days before the visit to be held by the Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi to Damascus on July 23rd.
Al-Janabai, who held in Damascus meetings with each of the Syrian minister of the Interior Lt. Gen. Ali Hammoud; and the minister of Finance Muhammad al-Hussein said yesterday that security meetings will start today between the two sides and will cover issues on border monitoring and the exchange of security information. Al-Janabi added that the Iraqi minister of the Interior will arrive in Damascus to complete those talks " and discuss all matters that would help the Iraqi side to control its security condition." But he stressed that the most important to that is the " exchange of information between the two sides on hostile activities," noting that " in the past, Iraq exported terrorists to Syria, now terrorist elements sneak from Syria to Iraq."
Al-Janabi added that the Iraqi side will hand over the Syrians a list in the name of Syrian detainees by the " multi national forces " as well as a list in the names of " Syrian opposition who were in Iraq under the former regime," noting that " among those are persons who might carry out terrorist acts." Al-Janabi added that among security points under discussions between the two sides are the " tribal kinship between Iraq and Syria" and the " crossing points " between the two states.
As for the financial file pending between Syria and Iraq, al-Janabi said that the two sides precisely defined the size of sums deposited in each of them of the former economic move, noting that the Syrians have more than USD 500 million. But he added that these number will be " void if we and the Syrians move on the ground of reciprocated cooperation," adding that Allawi's visit on July 23rd will draw the base for that.
