Venezuelan official and Mideast reforms
Regional-Venezuela, Politics, 7/19/2004
A senior Venezuelan official strongly criticized U.S. proposals on reforming the Middle East politically, stressing that such initiatives should come from inside rather than outside the region.
Rimon Kabshi, advisor to the Venezuelan President for Arab Affairs, said in an interview published Sunday in the Saudi Riyadh daily newspaper that the democracy the American administration advocated was the democracy of regimes that served Washington's interests.
To indicate that Washington is not serious about democracy in the Arab region, the Venezuelan official hinted at Israel as an example of the American vision of democracy in the region, pointing out to Israeli terrorism and behavior.
Mr. Kabshi described the situation in Iraq under the American occupation as a "terrible human catastrophe," calling on the world to put an end to this tragedy.
He added that Washington committed massacres and deadly mistakes in Iraq.
The Venezuelan official highlighted the initiative fielded by Latin American countries on opening dialogue with the Arab world, including this year's scheduled summit between the two sides for the best benefits of their peoples.
