Collapse of talks between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebels
Sudan, Politics, 7/19/2004
The withdrawal of the Sudan's west Darfur delegation from Addis Ababa talks with the delegation of the Sudanese government resulted in the collapse of these negotiations which was held at the mediation of the African Union.
The rebels stressed they will not return back to the table of negotiations unless the Sudanese government approves the six conditions they had set to make any talks pertinent to solving the crisis in Darfur.
The two justice and al-Musawat and Sudan's liberation movements -- the two main rebel movements in Darfur -- on Saturday set 6 conditions to accept sitting with the government delegation, especially dismantling al-Jangaweid weapons and what they called giving the freedom of movement for an international investigation in accusations of a mass killings that took place in the district.
The rebels also preconditioned trying what they called mass annihilation or mass cleansing, and ensuring the access of food aids without obstacles and releasing war prisoners and detainees and agreeing on a neutral place for the talks which will be held later, on the ground that Addis Ababa is not a neutral place because of the friendship between the government of Ethiopia and Khartoum.
