Libyan grace period for the US to remove sanctions
Libya-USA, Politics, 7/17/2004

Libya approved to give the US an additional two month grace period to remove what are left of the American sanctions imposed on it and lifting its name from the US Department Of State list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

According to American officials Washington will have until September 22 to take these two steps, otherwise Tripoli will reduce sums set for the families of 270 persons who were killed in the Pan American explosion in its 103 flight over Lockerbie in Scotland in 1988, estimated at USD 10 million for each killed persons.

In the beginning Libya set April 22 for Washington to implement the two said steps and then extended the period to July 22 and now agreed to extend it to September 22.

American officials say they are alleviating special sanctions on aviation and solving the question of frozen assets, but it is difficult to end that by the fall of July 22 and the new date ( September 22nd) is more realistic.

In April this year, the US alleviated trade embargo imposed on Libya to permit the American companies to buy the Libyan oil and invest in the economic sector in this country for the first time since 1986. That step was a reward for Tripoli over its giving up of the mass destruction weapons program.
