Iraqi government represented in a committee on fate of detainees
Iraq, Politics, 7/17/2004
The official in charge of prisons sector in the multinational forces Gen. Jeffery Miller said that representatives for the Interim Iraqi government will take part in the council which will re-consider the situation of 5200 Iraqis detained by the American forces.
Miller explained from Camp Buka -- one of the detention camps belonging to the multinational forces to the south of Iraq -- that the council will be composed of representatives for each and every Iraqi ministry and for three representatives of the multi national forces.
He indicated that "in recognition of the greater importance of the partnership with the Interim Government, we asked the ministry of justice and the human rights ministry and the multinational forces to sit with us within the framework of the committee in charge of discussing files of detainees who are presumed to be released." The new council will replace the current one by the end of the current month which is in charge of studying the conditions of the Iraqi detainees and is composed of a military judge and an intelligence officer and military police officer representing the multinational forces.
