Settling Sahara conflict requires frank dialogue between Rabat and Algiers, Minister
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 7/16/2004

Settling the Sahara issue requires a "clear and frank dialogue" between Morocco and neighboring Algeria, reiterated Thursday, the Moroccan minister of communication and the Government spokesman.

Nabil Benabdallah told a press briefing that Morocco welcomes all initiatives of brotherly countries to reach a final and comprehensive solution (to the Sahara dispute) that cares for Morocco's national sovereignty.

Morocco's stance over this dispute is "clear and unequivocal," stressed Benabdallah, saying his country is ready to work for a "final settlement of this issue in harmony with Morocco's approach and in respect of the kingdom's territorial unity."

The minister did not exclude the possibility of an upcoming visit of Moroccan officials to Algiers to discuss questions of common interest, "including the issue of our territorial integrity."

Algerian authorities, despite their military, political, financial and logistic support to the separatists, have so far denied any involvement in this dispute, brushing aside calls from the international community including the superpowers and the UN for a direct dialogue with Morocco.

Benabdallah also reiterated Morocco's disposal to intensify contacts with Algeria in order to consolidate bilateral relations and overcome obstacles hindering relations between the two neighboring countries.
