American congress rejects a proposal to reduce aids to Egypt
Egypt-USA, Politics, 7/16/2004

The US house of representatives yesterday responded to the call made by the US President George Bush administration, rejecting a joint attempt made by the republican and democratic parties to reduce the annual military aids dedicated to Egypt to the half, estimated at USD 1.3 billion, considering, this will threaten relations with Cairo in a critical phase.

The council rejected the proposal at a majority of 287 votes for 131. The US secretary of state Colin Powell sent a message to the representatives, in which he urged them not to approve the proposal. Representatives also indicated that the advisor of the American President for the national security affairs Condaleeza Rice telephoned several of them and asking them to reject the proposal.

Persons who proposed the initiative, especially the democratic parliamentarian for California Tom Lantos, justified that to that Egypt did not make enough efforts to fight terrorism, eliminating anti- Semitism and enhancing peace in the Middle East.
