Solana Advisor holds talks with al-Shara

Advisor of the High Representative of the EU Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, Anna Lisa Jianila said that the aim of her recent visit to Syria is to brief the Syrian friends on the security strategy and the strategy of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction that was adopted by the European Union in last December.
In a statement to reporters on Thursday following her meeting with Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, Jianila pointed out that this strategy based on the principle of plurality in cooperation with the Mediterranean states. This strategy aimed at establishing a strategy with them that allows better understanding of each other.
She expressed hope that this strategy will be fruitful and efficient in the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Association.
She said " We want to set up a association strategy with Syria and the states of region states that is based on dialogue and cooperation in the political issues including the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."
Meantime, Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara on Thursday reiterated Syria's call for making the Middle East a free zone of all weapons of mass destruction, as well as the necessity of cooperate between all the parties with no exception to achieve this goal.
Al-Shara who received Anna Lisa Jianila, Advisor of the Higher Representative of the EU Foreign Policy and Security Javier Solana, discussed with her relations between Syria and the EU.
He stressed that Syria's and European's stances are identical according in line with Barcelona's Declaration for Euro-Mediterranean Association.
Jianila reviewed the European policy regarding weapons of mass destruction and the initiatives to limit its proliferation.
Al-Shara reiterated the Syrian Initiative in this regard represented by the Arab draft resolution proposed to UN Security Council on making the region free zone of all weapons of mass destruction.
