Bush urges Sudan to halt violence in Darfur
Sudan-USA, Politics, 7/14/2004

The US President George W. Bush urged the Sudanese government to move quickly to halt violence in Darfur district and to end the humanitarian crisis there. Meantime, Khartoum announced it had dispatched some 3,000 security men to the area and that it is progressing in improving humanitarian conditions there.

In a speech he delivered before African ambassadors in Washington when he signed the trade privileges law for the African continent, Bush said: " I call the Sudanese government to halt the violence of ( Jangwid militias) and call on all sides to honor the cease fire, honor human rights and permits the freedom of movement for relief workers." He added: I feel deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

The spokesman for the US Department Of State said on Monday that the government of Sudan did not exert enough efforts to end the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. He asked the UN to prepare to take measures against Khartoum if it fails to control Jangaweid militias which is accused of attacking villagers of African descent in the region.

Meantime, the Sudanese foreign minister Muhammad Othman Ismael said in a statement issued today by the German Tag Zeitung daily that the Sudanese police detained 50 persons of the Arab militias. He added " we have sent some 3,000 policeman to Darfur and the number will increase to 6,000 and that the situation in the camps is improving greatly." Ismael said " we send security forces from the south to Darfur, where these forces protect the passages of humanitarian aids." The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir had promised the US secretary of state Colin Powell who visited Darfur in June to disarm the militias and facilitate the access of humanitarian aids and start a political operation to solve the crisis with the district's rebellions.
