The end of three weeks of sufferings in the sea
Sudan-Italy, Local, 7/13/2004
The sufferings of 37 Sudanese ended following three weeks of Italian rejection to permit them to land on the coasts of Cecile after their ship crashed and were rescued by a German rescue ship. The Italian government only backtracked its position after pressures from the UN and the Vatican..
The Italian police permitted the refugees, with most of them Sudanese to land at Porto Ambidokly port in Cecile Island after they had stayed on board of a German aid ship " Cap Anamore " for three weeks.
After they underwent medical tests, they were transported by buses to the refugees centers where hundreds of illegal immigrants arrive in the coasts of the Island which is situated on the Mediterranean. Some 36 of the refugees said they came from Darfur. However, one local police official said that the Italian authorities permitted the Sudanese refugees to land for " humanitarian reasons."
