Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary General Lakhdar Brahimi on Monday described his discussions with Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara as very positive.

"The discussions focused on the situation in Iraq and in the region in general" he told reporters after meeting al-Shara. He pointed out to the role of the neighboring countries in the stability of Iraq. He renewed the UN keenness on restoring security and stability in the region and establishing an independent Palestinian state. The international official stressed that UN condemned terrorism wherever it occurred.

Earlier, al-Shara discussed with Brahimi the latest developments in the region, particularly in Iraq and Palestine.

The importance of enhancing the role of the UN in finding a settlement to the issues of the region in line with the international resolutions in a way that preserves the peoples legitimate rights was discussed.
