Zeibari calls for tangible aids to Iraq
Iraq-European Union, Politics, 7/13/2004
The Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zeibari yesterday in Brussels called on the Europeans to give "tangible aid" to rebuilding Iraq and for the political authority hand-over in Iraq.
Zeibari indicated that he is carrying a series of proposals he will discuss with the foreign ministers of the European Union.
The foreign ministers of the European Union are expected to renew the commitment of the union to economic, social and political support in collaboration with the UN, according to the draft final statement of the meeting.
The draft statement also urges the Interim Iraqi government not to reactivate the death penalty on which officials in Baghdad said that it will be reactivated until a limited time.
Zeibari will be meeting in Brussels with the NATO secretary general in order to discuss the possibility if supporting the new Iraqi army. France, Germany opposed any official presence for the NATO in Iraq, thereby rejecting an agreement concluded by the coalition states in June to train Iraqi security forces.
Meanwhile, France re-opened its embassy in Baghdad after a boycott that lasted 13 years. The French flag was hoisted at the building of the embassy in the downtown of Baghdad. The French ambassador in Baghdad said that his country seeks to improve its relations with Iraq and hopes for greater cooperation with the Iraqi government.
