Rebels attack governmental positions in Darfur; Fischer visits Khartoum, Ismael criticizes Germany
Sudan, Politics, 7/13/2004
The German foreign minister Yushka Fischer called on Sudan to abide by its commitment made to the UN to dismantle the Jangawid weapons in Darfur. He spoke upon his arrival in Khartoum airport of the need that the Sudanese government commit to its promises concerning the situation in Darfur.
But the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael announced the rejection of the government of any new German recommendations concerning the security and humanitarian situation in Darfur.
In statements prior to the arrival of the German minister, he explained that his government has its own plans to deal with the humanitarian and security conditions in the district in collaboration with the UN. He said that if Fischer's visit intends to provide aid and support and empowering the government to abide by its obligations to the international community, without prejudice or pressures, the government will welcome that.
Ismael implicitly criticized Germany's position from Sudan concerning conditions in Darfur, noting that Germany is considered one of the toughest countries in passing a draft resolution to this effect at the UN Security Council despite the fact that there are many countries which still resist this draft resolution.
But Ismael expressed his hope that Fischer's visit will be for cooperation especially following positive statements made by a German Parliamentary delegation following its visit to Darfur's district last week. He added "should this visit to justify what Germany is doing at the UN Security Council and the European Union, then we say this will only makes Darfur question more complicated." The Sudanese minister disclosed that scores of Jangawid's militias were so far detained. He said that this is made within the efforts made by the government to impose its hegemony on the militias in the district.
