Washington renews pressures on Sudan, Blair threatens sanctions
Sudan-USA, Politics, 7/9/2004
The US said on Wednesday that the Sudanese government has only several days to halt what are called crimes in Darfur, otherwise it will face the first shift of sanctions from the UN Security Council.
The New American ambassador to the UN John Danforth said in the first day of assuming his post that the members started the negotiations on Thursday over a draft resolution drafted by the US imposing weapons embargo and travel at leaders accused of " stealing, raping and forcing millions of black African refugees to displace from their homes." He added to journalists at the UN "we talk about this week.. it is an urgent matter," noting that a period of 30 days is more than enough for the government to move.
For his part, the British prime minister Tony Blair loomed imposing sanctions on Khartoum in case it abstains from cooperating to allow food aid to reach Darfur population. He said that if the Sudanese government will not co-operate "we will find any measures we have to take."
