Butaflika calls on the army not to interfere in politics
Algeria, Politics, 7/6/2004
The Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika called on the army to abide by its constitutional role in protecting the country's independence, defending its borders and not to interfere in the country's political life.
Butaflika said in a speech on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of Algeria's independence which falls July 5th that the military establishment which contributed to fighting terrorism and the other security forces are to be professional in its work, in line with current developments in the world.
In his capacity as the higher commander of the army, Butaflika stressed he is to supervise introducing amendments to the work of the military establishment.
He, on the other hand, said that the state defeated terrorism but not wholly exterminated it and is determined to do so, by exerted efforts and the intensification of the security and army forces.
But he also stressed that issue of the army's confining to its barracks and not to interfere in the political work or to affect it by any means. He also urged the issue of professionalty he had already announced in his first term of office. The project of " professionalty " deals with the subjugation of the military establishment of the political authority with the principles approved by NATO, which Algeria have been making contacts for years.
