WHO warns against the death if thousands; Annan talks with Bashir today, about Darfour's refugees
Sudan-UN, Politics, 7/2/2004

The UN secretary General Kofi Annan told the Sudanese refugees of Darfour that they will be returned back to their homes after guarantees from the Sudanese government to protect them.

He said that no body has the right to return them back by force. Annan who was talking to a group of Sudanese who had fled from the war in Darfour district to the border areas with Chad said talks are being held with the government of Khartoum to that effect.

Annan added he will meet today ( Friday) once again with the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir to discuss the humanitarian situation and the issue of the refugees safety to enable them from returning back to their homes safely.

He vowed to work with the Sudanese government and with President of Chad Idris Bebi to find out a solution and to ease down the situation in Darfour.

For his part, Deibi asked the international group to pressure the rebels and the Sudanese government in a way that leads to finding out a solution for the return back of refugees.

In Njamina, capital of Chad, Annan renewed his call for "political solution as soon as possible" to avoid a humanitarian crisis in Darfour. Annan said in a press statement following a meeting lasted two hours with President Deibi on Thursday " It is necessary to find out a political solution as soon as possible " and he warned of what he called regional crisis if this will not be made.

Annan is due to head today to Abshe ( 700 Km to the east of Njamina ) before he will visit Ereiba camp for the refugees, 60 Km from the Sudanese- Chad borders and then will return back to Khartoum.

For its part the World Health Organization WHO warned yesterday that several thousands of persons in Darfour might die this month because of Cholera unless a relief operation is arranged based on using helicopters in food and medicine transports.

A WHO senior official said that Cholera might spread within weeks with the beginning of the rainfall season to hit 200,300 thousands among one million displaced in the area of unrest to the west of Sudan.
