Morocco-Guatemala, Politics, 7/1/2004

Guatemala "fully supports" Moroccan moves to settle the Sahara issue, said, in Rabat Wednesday, Speaker of the South American country's parliament, Rolando Morales Chavez, at the end of a meetings with heads of Moroccan parliamentary groups.

The Guatemalan official reiterated at the meeting his country's total support to the issue of the Sahara (Moroccan southern provinces). The former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid accords signed with Spain and Mauritania. The Algeria-backed separatist "Polisario" movement is claiming secession of the territory.

He also stressed resolve to further consolidate Morocco-Guatemala ties in various fields, particularly cooperation between the legislative branches.

The Moroccan MPs briefed the Guatemalan official of the importance of this issue for Morocco which is urging for an end to the plight endured by Moroccans who are sequestered by the separatists in the Tindouf camps, southern Algeria.

Most of central and south American countries are supporting Morocco in this issues, including Ecuador, Costa Rica, Dominican republic, Honduras, Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Colombia, which have withdrawn their recognition of the puppet "Sahrawi republic," proclaimed by the Polisario.

Other countries of the region have never recognized the puppet republic. (MAP)SH
