Al-Turabi starts hunger strikes

The Sudanese Islamic opposition member Hassan al-Turabi, who is detained since three months together with 70 of his supporters yesterday started a food strike in protest of their detention without trial.

Wisal al-Mahdi, al-Turabi wife said that al-Turabi and 73 detainees, with most of them belong to the People's Congress party, with the exception of three only, " started a food strike in protest of their detention that is done without accusation and without trial amid difficult circumstances."

She added that the observers of the food strike take only water and some dates "in line with the Islamic Sharia which forbids suicide."
