Washington resumes diplomatic relations with Tripoli
Libya-USA, Politics, 6/29/2004

The US yesterday resumed its diplomatic relations with Libya following a cessation that lasted for 24 years. The US under secretary of state William Burns officially inaugurated the new American Liaison office in Tripoli.

Burns conveyed a message from the US President George W. Bush to the Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi in which Bush stressed the commitment of the US to work for developing its relations with Libya and restoring back political, economic, trade and cultural relations between the two countries to normalcy.

This measure comes as a culmination for the improvement of Libyan- American relations as Tripoli announced in December 2003 that it ended its programs for nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

On the other hand, the US Department Of State announced that the American delegation which is led by Burns expressed before high ranking Libyan officials, the concern of the US administration over information on the possibility that the Libyan regime had tried to support a plan for assassinating the Saudi crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz.

The spokesman for the US Department Of State, Adam Early, said this delegation which includes also the official in charge of terrorism fighting at the department Kofer Black met with the Libyan leader.

The American spokesman added that the delegation tackled the current dialogue taking place currently at the economic and political level between Washington and Tripoli.

The spokesman indicated that the talks dealt with Washington's fears on " Libya previous support for terrorism and maintaining dialogue with this country to support the war against terrorism."
