Extension of custody for 24 Muslim brotherhood members in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 6/29/2004
The Attorney General in Egypt renewed the detention of 25 members of the Muslim Brothers group, which is legally banned for 15 days after they were accused of planning to topple the ruling regime.
A police source asked to be anonymous said on Monday that the extension of detention aims to making more inquiries over the charges addressed to the detainees.
The court on Saturday extended custody for other 24 persons for the same period of time -- according to the law -- releasing the detainees of extending the period of their detention for sending them for trial." The Egyptian authorities accuse the detainees of sending fighters to Iraq, Chechenia and the Palestinian territories in order to make training for toppling the Iraqi government.
The Muslim Brothers group accuses the government of not providing appropriate health care to its members in the Egyptian jails. International and local human rights organizations condemned the Egyptian authorities over torturing detainees in the prisons.
