Ammar Sueidani elected as speaker for the Algerian parliament
Algeria, Politics, 6/24/2004
Algerian parliamentarian Ammar Sueidani has become officially the speaker of the Algerian parliament after he had won the majority of votes in the secret voting carried out in front of three candidates, two of them are from the national liberation front party while the third is a member in the Islamic national reform council.
Sueidani ( 51 year old) had a prior support for the leaderships of the parties of the national liberation front and the national democratic coalition, led by the prime minister Ahmad O Yahya and the peace society movement which he had established as a presidential coalition to enhance the opportunities for Butaflika's winning of a five year new term of office.
Sueidani's elections came three weeks after the resignation of the former speaker of the parliament Karim Younis who used to be considered one of the main supporters for the former secretary general of the liberation front Ali Benflis, the main rival of Butaflika in the presidential elections which were held in April 2003.
