Amnesty International criticizes the human rights violations in the Gulf states
Gulf, Politics, 6/23/2004

Amnesty International on Tuesday criticized what it described human rights violations in the Gulf states and the Arab Peninsula in the name of what is called war on terrorism.

In a report on human rights and the war on terrorism in the Gulf and the Arab Peninsula, the organization condemned the result of the war of " annoying violation of the sovereignty of human rights and the international criterion of human rights " and from humanitarian suffering.

The organization said that what is called the war on terrorism in the Gulf resulted in the occurrence of oppressive collective and mass detention without trial and torturing and compulsory settlement of persons to countries where they are subjected to grave violations of human rights, as well as assassination operations against the confines of the judiciary.

The report also indicated the governments of the region are using the war as a pretext to restrict the freedom of expression and political opposition and scare journalists and critics of the government, but the organization recorded that the governments of the region started in recent years to positively responded to demands on improvement of human rights conditions.

The results attained by the report are based on researches carried out by the organization on January and February 2004 in Yemen and the Gulf state through meetings with the families of former detainees, and former detainees, human rights activists, lawyers and government officials.

In light of the results of the report, the organization urged the government of the region and the American government to release the detainees of opinions.
