Sudan accuses Eritrea of obstructing peace in the south
Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 6/19/2004
Sudan has accused its neighbor Eritrea yesterday of attempting to undermine an agreement to end the civil war in southern Sudan, and called on the UN Security Council to put an end to what is being carried out by Asmara to this effect.
The Sudanese ambassador at the UN, al-Fateh Erwa, said that Eritrea persists to continue to be a tool of destruction in Sudan through its attempt to encourage, host and prepare groups targeting Sudan's security and stability.
In a statement -- prepared for the UN security council -- Erwa added that his country asks the council to take necessary measures to halt the efforts made by Eritrea.
The Sudanese accusation came at a time when the Council was in a meeting to adopt a resolution authorizing a UN team to make a quick assessment to the needs of peace keeping in southern Sudan, where agreements concluded by the beginning of the month ( June) paved the way for ending the longest civil war in Africa.
The government of Eritrea accuses Sudan of supporting Islamic groups who launched attacks by bombs in the western part of the country during the recent months but Sudan denies this accusation.
