Sherif: Mubarak wisely leads reform process
Egypt, Politics, 6/18/2004
Secretary General of Egypt's National Democratic Party (NDP) and Minister of Information Safwat El Sherif said that President Hosni Mubarak, the NDP leader, was wisely and courageously leading the process of reform in Egypt.
During a training course for NDP youths on Thursday, Sherif said Egypt has been serious about the reform, pointing out to progress achieved in this domain.
The Minister added that Mubarak was clear in his rejection of conducting political reforms imposed from outside.
Sherif said the coming stage would witness meetings and dialogues among all political parties, including the NDP, adding that President Mubarak's call for dialogue was in the interest of all Egyptians.
The Minister of information said the aim of dialogue with all parties was to prepare a code of honor among them with the objective of eliminating the negative sides of capital control and thuggery in elections.
The NDP expresses the aspirations of the people and their desire to achieve progress towards a better future, added the minister.
Sherif pointed out to the freedom of the press in Egypt, saying it represented a plank for the freedom of expression and democratic practice. He said that the Syndicate of Journalists had prepared a draft law on abolishing the imprisonment of journalists.
Sherif said the bill is being debated with the Ministry of Justice and the Higher Council for the Press in Egypt to achieve President Mubarak's goal for abolishing jail sentences against journalists. The one-party era is gone, said Sherif, adding that the Egyptian leadership welcomed new ideas and thoughts by youths.
