Mubarak meets with Qurei' today, Israel to besiege Gaza by water
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 6/18/2004
President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt meets today with the Palestinian prime minister Ahmad Qurei' in Cairo after he had on Thursday cancelled the meeting for unknown reasons amid news on the deterioration of health conditions of the Egyptian President.
Qurei' had met with the advisor of the Egyptian President Osama al-Baz and stressed that there are no Palestinian reservations on the forthcoming Egyptian role in Gaza after the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces, calling on the US to give support in this regard and on Israel to give guarantees to provide this initiative a success, noting that resumption of the dialogue among the Palestinian groups in Cairo is still under discussion.
Meantime, the Israeli defense ministry announced a bid for the feasibility study of constructing a huge water trench of a 15 to 25 meters depth (a moat) and 4 kilometers length in Rafah along the border between Gaza and Egypt with the aim of preventing what is described by Israel of weapons smuggling operations for the Palestinian fighters.
The Palestinian authority criticized this plan. The Palestinian minister Saeb Oreikat said this will be the beginning to make Gaza into a huge prison.
